Planning To Dig Around Your Home?
Are you planning to fence, landscape, excavate a patio or swimming pool?
Beware of buried pipes and wires. Did you know that when you dig by hand or excavate with machinery you risk damaging an underground network of natural gas pipes, telephone lines, hydro cablevision cables, water pipes and, in some areas, oil pipes also?
Dig safely. Digging in the wrong spot could cut off essential services, not just to one home, but to an entire community. Damaged underground services creates a safety hazard to you and to others.
Its the law. Homeowners and contractors are required by law to ascertain the location of buried natural gas pipes and other underground services.
Careless digging can be costly. Damages to a utility line caused by careless digging could result in a costly lawsuit. Anyone who damages natural gas pipes is liable for at least the cost of repairs.
Free locating service. Play it safe. Ontario One Call offers a free locate service to help you protect yourself and others from unnecessary damage. Utilities will locate underground natural gas pipes and wires and will mark the spots which should be avoided.
Call first. Before you start digging, call at least one week in advance to schedule an appointment. Consumers and Enbridge Gas, Hydro One and Bell Canada are just a few of the members of service called Ontario One Call. When you telephone One Call, it will notify the utilities on your behalf. Notify other utilities also. We also urge you to call your local hydro, cablevision, water utilities and oil suppliers for the locations of their service lines on the site where you plan to dig.
